Many people evaluate startup success based on the quality of the idea. In reality, the founder is often the stronger predictor of success. Great founders learn quickly, adapt to changing conditions, attract talented people, absorb difficult feedback, and continuously improve the business. Ideas evolve. The founder determines whether the company can evolve with them. The idea may start the journey. The founder determines where it ends.

I would usually bet on the A+ founder with the C+ idea, assuming the market is not fundamentally broken. Strong founders learn, adapt, attract talent, absorb hard feedback, and improve the idea. A weaker founder can waste even a great idea through poor judgment, weak execution, or inability to build trust around the business.
Ideas matter, but early on, they are often less fixed than people think. Founders shape how fast a company learns, how clearly it prioritizes, and how well it responds when reality pushes back. I would rather back the person who can evolve the idea than the idea that depends on the wrong person.
